Beaucerons are strong well-muscled dogs characterized by elegance and grace. The breed is rather popular in France and is considered rare in the United States. However, the Beauceron is very old. The first record of the breed dates back to 1578. This massive dog is often referred to as the king of sheep dogs. This utility dog is very intelligent and affectionate. Due to its rarity, the Beauceron has retained its working qualities.
Beaucerons are independent dogs. They are very confident and tend to be dominant, which is an inconvenience for some owners. Beaucerons are not recommended for novice owners. Mild training is not what Beaucerons need. It does not mean, though, that the owners should use harsh methods when training the dog. The whole point of Beauceron training is respecting the dog and making use of consistent training.
Beaucerons - Appearance
Beaucerons are massive dogs that stand about 25 ? and 27 ? inches at the shoulder. Females are generally smaller than males. An adult female reaches the height of 24 to 26 ? inches. The dogs should be balanced, with a long head carried up high when at attention. The neck is muscular. The long tail is never docked. The Beauceron usually carries it down. However, when in action, the dog will raise it in a curve.

The eyes seem to express the core of the breed's temperament. The eyes are always quiet and confident. They are large and usually dark in color. The Beauceron's ears are set up high. Most breeders and owners prefer to crop the ears. However, it is not necessary.
Beaucerons have a short coat that comes in a few color patterns. Bi-colored dogs have red on the legs, and black and tan markings on the rest of the body. Tri-colored Beaucerons are of black, gray, and tan colors. Since Beaucerons are average shedders, one does not have to spend a lot of time grooming a dog. Occasional brushing will do.
Beaucerons - Energy Level
Beaucerons are strong dogs that need a great deal of exercise. They are happiest when kept in a fenced yard. However, an apartment will do if the dog is exercised daily. It should be kept in mind that Beaucerons are working dogs. They can be used as herding dogs. In fact, the Beauceron still serves as a sheep dog on many French farms. Some Beaucerons are used in rescue work. They are not easy to train due to their independent character. However, consistent trainers achieve considerable results in training Beaucerons.
