Beauceron Breeder
An experienced and reputable Beauceron breeder is difficult to find in the USA. Though the Beauceron is very popular in France as a working dog, there are only a few dogs of this breed in America. The Americans know the Beauceron mostly as a guard, watchdog, and a family pet. Like all herding breeds, the Beauceron is very versatile and easy to learn new tasks. It’s good at police and military work, Schutzhund, tracking, obedience, agility, search, and rescue work.
Beauceron dogs originated as sheep herders. To perform this task, a dog requires a variety of skills. Only the most intelligent and agile dogs able to control large herds were bred. A responsible Beauceron breeder of the 16-19th centuries selected purebred dogs for both personality and working abilities. The appearance was not important, unless it influences the abilities of the dogs to perform their task. The breed standard of today is not very strict as far as the appearance of the Beauceron is concerned, but the typical Beauceron personality is the main thing purebred dogs are praised for.
A responsible Beauceron breeder of today should breed for temperament and intelligence. Modern Beauceron dogs are praised for their working abilities and are used mostly as guards, watchdogs, and personal protectors. Dogs of this breed are very protective and territorial. They are bold, alert, determined, self-assured, and faithful to the master. These dogs are serious, calm, and dignified; they will not bark without a reason. The imposing size, stern expression, and massive body of the Beauceron dog make it unsuited for families with babies, but older children can be trusted with these gentle and loyal dogs.
The Beauceron is not a breed for everyone. Those who need an affectionate pet that will clown around and seek for attention should not own a Beauceron. Though very devoted to the family, Beaucerons are reluctant to show their affection. They are always self-controlled and even aloof. They don’t seek for human company, but do their job of guarding the house. First time dog owners may find it difficult to housebreak and train a Beauceron. A devoted Beauceron breeder will refuse selling a dog of this breed to the wrong family.
