Beauceron Pet Dog
The Beauceron pet dog has a French origin. It’s the largest and the oldest French sheepdog developed with no crossbreeding to foreign breeds. The dogs were named after “La Beauce”, the plains around Paris. The other names of the breed are Berger de Beauce, which means shepherd of Beauce, and bas Rouge, which means red stockings. Dogs of this breed are around 27 inches at the withers and up to 110 pounds in weight. The common colors of the Beauceron dogs are black and tan. Harlequin pattern with black, tan, and gray markings is the other possible coloration for the Beauceron. The coat should be short, but weather-resistant. The undercoat is soft and wooly; the outer coat is coarse and straight.
The Beauceron pet dog was unknown outside France until the second World War. The versatility and inherent intelligence of the Beauceron dogs made them very useful during wartime. They detected mines, carried messages and ammunition, found the wounded, and picked up trails when no other dog breed could be used. In France, this breed is still popular as a police and military dog.
In America, this breed is not used for its original purpose, because little is known about its talents and there are only a few Beauceron breeders in the USA. These large and powerful dogs are usually kept as family pets and guards of the property outside their country of origin. A Beauceron pet dog is a reliable guard of the house and a protective family companion. In the right hands, Beauceron dogs are highly trainable and loyal. They are very faithful to the family and can well be trusted with small children, but babies and toddlers should not be left with such a large and intimidating animal, because they may be frightened.
Beauceron dogs are often described as independent thinkers. They are excellent problem solvers and respond well only to consistent and firm training. Drill is not for them. These dogs quickly understand what is required of them and don’t need to be motivated by treats. The Beauceron pet dog needs minimal grooming and can be kept both indoors and outdoors.
