Beaucerons - Origin

The origin of Beaucerons is still not clear. There are two main versions as to the history of the dog. The Beauceron might have originated from an ancient dog (Canis familiaris palustris). It might also have originated from the wolf (Canis lupus).

The breed was developed in France. Due to a limited territory, Beaucerons acquired a number of specific appearance and temperament traits. Their main function was hunting the wild boar, bear, and deer. Agriculture development increased demand for extensive territories free of forests. Since the habitat of wild animals was reduced greatly Beauceron's hunting talents became unnecessary. Nevertheless, the breed was good for herding and guarding. Therefore, it did not perish with the land use shift.

The earliest record of the breed dates back to the Renaissance. A written paper (1578) is reliable proof of the breed's existence. In 1809, abbot Rozier touched upon the subject of training sheep dogs in his work. He mentioned a massive guarding dog capable of attacking the wolf.

Beaucerons - Recognition

The Beauceron was first shown in 1863 in France. The Societe Imperiale d'Acclimatation organized the show that marked the official appearance of the new breed. However, no sooner than in 1896 was the official breed standard coined. It was agreed to distinguish between two sheep dogs: the long-coated Berger Brie and the smooth-coated Berger de Beauce. The names of the breeds are in no way linked to the French provinces.

In 1897, the first breed club appeared. The Club francais du chien de Berger operated in the ward of the Department of Agriculture. Another club, Les Amis du Beauceron, was formed in 1911. Since that time on, it has been encouraging breeders and owners of the Beauceron to follow the official breed standard and promote the breed.

Beaucerons - Distribution

During World War II the Beauceron was at the edge of extinction. By the middle of the 20th century, there were about fifty dogs left. Fortunately, the population of the breed was re-established. Nowadays, the Beauceron is known outside France. However, it is still a rare breed that has a long way to go to win fame worldwide. Low numbers of the breed are due to the high standards breeders and owners have to follow to produce first class dogs. Only Beaucerons with perfect working qualities and stable personalities can be bred.
